Overview
As a service to the public, Kern County Superior Court will maintain a panel of civil mediators who have:
  • Satisfied qualifications required by the court
  • Completed the court's application process and
  • Agreed to comply with requirements for ethical conduct as described in California Rules of Court, rules 1620 et seq. (opens new window)

Qualifications
Qualifications for placement on the Civil Mediator Panel have been developed by consensus between the court, the local bar association and community members. These qualifications are:
  • Completion of a court-approved application packet
  • Minimum 40 hours training in mediation skills, at the discretion of the court ADR committee
  • Experience mediating at least three civil cases

How to Apply
Application materials are available in the Civil Department or on the court's website. A completed application shall include: The court will provide information and will process applications. The court may research or verify information contained therein. It is the applicant's responsibility to complete the application documents and to provide the required verification.
Once an applicant has been accepted by the Court as a mediator he or she must complete, sign and date a Mediator Information Form. The information on this form will be posted on the Court's Web site and may also be made available to the public by other means.
If the mediator wishes to have their resume posted on the Court's Web site, they may send their resume (Word or PDF format only) to the Court on diskette or via e-mail. The Court will not be responsible for scanning or reformatting documents.

How to Attain Required Experience
Qualifying experience may be attained by mediating civil cases on a pro bono basis during the mandatory settlement conference phase. Successful resolution or a minimum of two hours of mediation service is required per case. Contact the court's ADR Administrator for more information.
